In the midst of preparing papers for CHI, Madeline and I ran a textiles and computing workshop at the beginning of August. We invited a group of people with interesting backgrounds to try out the Lilypad Arduino and other ways of working with e-textiles. Since then I’ve been writing and reading, but today and yesterday, I’ve been really getting into designing some stimulus materials so I’m ready to start working with my groups at the end of September. This has been fab. It has meant that I have worked out two of the probe designs and where there might be tangible room for some technology to make it more interactive and personalised. The two things I’ve been working on are ideas for ways of mapping people and objects who are near and far, and representing three big moments in people’s lives. The last one I want to do is about highs, lows and possible futures using a landscape to highlight things that might be on the horizon. I’ve been checking out ways of embeddings speakers into the fabrics too, courtesy of the amazing Kobakant website.
